Media Milwaukee is now a WordPress site with a new look and a new URL.
Getting the new site up and running did take slightly longer (okay, a lot longer) than I originally thought it would, but I think the Digital Media Lab Assistants and I managed to put together a pretty awesome finished product.
Porting all of the content from the old Media Milwaukee into the new site probably wasn’t what the Lab Assistants had in mind when they initially inquired about student employment opportunities with the department. But being the amazing employees that they are, they added more than 300 stories and 200 authors to the new Media Milwaukee. And they did this while simultaneously (some might say monotonously) archiving every article and image onto a wonky thumb drive that somehow managed to bounce between the four of them without getting lost in the shuffle of their shifts.
As that part of the puzzle was starting to become more and more of a discernible accomplishment, I was still dealing with missing pieces like: How am I going to get “MEDIA MILWAUKEE” and “STUDENT-POWERED NEWS | UNIVERSITY OF WISCONSIN-MILWAUKEE” to work with this responsive theme when that tagline does a line break in some new and unexpected place whenever I make the slightest change to its CSS? (I wound up making four different PNG versions of the header logo in Adobe Illustrator and then linking to each one in the Media Queries section of the theme’s syle.css page.)
Now that the new Media Milwaukee site is live, we can focus on the fun stuff (like getting new stories added, establishing best practices for using the Yoast SEO plugin and setting up a Google Analytics account for the site.)
Is it weird that I’m excited for fall and summer hasn’t even really started yet?
(Don’t answer that.)
